Asha Sharma Appointed CEO at Microsoft Gaming

Microsoft has appointed Asha Sharma as Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Gaming. In the role, she will focus on empowering studios, investing in major franchises, and expanding Xbox across console, PC, mobile, and cloud as Microsoft enters its next phase in gaming. The appointment was announced on February 20, 2026, following the retirement of longtime gaming chief Phil Spencer.

Sharma steps into the role from within Microsoft, where she most recently served as Corporate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for AI Platform. Before joining Microsoft, she held senior operating and product leadership roles at Instacart and Meta, and earlier in her career worked at Porch Group and Audiencescience. Microsoft said she brings experience building and scaling platforms, aligning business models to long-term value, and operating at global scale.

Why this matters: This appointment signals that Microsoft is positioning gaming more tightly around platform expansion, operating discipline, and long-horizon ecosystem growth rather than treating Xbox as a standalone console business. Bringing in a leader with deep platform and AI operating experience suggests Microsoft sees the future of gaming as spanning devices, services, creators, and cloud infrastructure, while still maintaining a strong commitment to the category itself.
