Shobhit Varshney Appointed CAIO at UnitedHealth Group Optum

UnitedHealth Group Optum has appointed Shobhit Varshney as Chief AI Officer. In this role, he will bring AI strategy, platform and delivery under a unified mandate, overseeing the enterprise AI platform, AI and data science teams, and governance. His focus will include scaling AI across the organization while improving experiences, reducing administrative friction and supporting better healthcare outcomes with appropriate governance and human oversight.

Varshney joins from Citi, where he served as Global Head of AI and led the firm's enterprise-wide AI strategy, execution and adoption. Before Citi, he spent more than 13 years at IBM, most recently as Head of Data & AI for IBM Consulting across the United States, Canada and Latin America, leading large-scale AI and automation transformations. Earlier in his career, he worked at Bloomberg in visualization and analytics and at Intel in research and engineering.

Why this matters: The appointment centralizes AI strategy, technology infrastructure, delivery and governance under a dedicated executive leader as UnitedHealth Group expands its investment in artificial intelligence. With the company planning billions of dollars in AI investment across 2026 and 2027, Varshney's experience scaling enterprise AI at Citi and IBM could be particularly relevant as Optum moves AI deeper into healthcare operations while managing the governance demands of a highly regulated industry.
