The National Institutes of Health has appointed Maureen Falvella as Chief Information Officer. In this role, she will lead NIH’s enterprise IT strategy, with a focus on strengthening collaboration across the organization. Her mandate includes guiding technology strategy, policy, governance, security, and oversight for one of the world’s largest biomedical research agencies.
Falvella has held several senior technology and cybersecurity leadership roles across NIH. She previously served as Acting Director and NIH Chief Information Officer for the Office of the Chief Information Officer, and earlier held the role of Acting NIH Chief Information Security Officer. Prior to her roles within NIH OCIO, she served as Chief Information Security Officer and Information System Security Officer at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and earlier held technology operations roles at TerpSys.
Why this matters: NIH’s appointment of Falvella signals the growing importance of cybersecurity, governance, and enterprise technology coordination across federal health research infrastructure. Her background in information security, risk management, and NIH-wide IT leadership gives the agency a CIO with direct experience protecting critical research systems while enabling collaboration across institutes and centers.
